I introduced one of my very favorite movies to my roommates over the weekend: “What about Bob.”
If you aren’t familiar with the classic 80’s film, it is about a very likable, obsessive-compulsive psych patient (Bill Murray as “Bob”) and the psychiatrist he drives absolutely crazy (Richard Dreyfuss as “Dr. Leo Marvin).
In the beginning of the movie, Dr. Marvin, confident in his ability to “fix” Bob, gives Bob a copy of his latest bestselling book “Baby Steps” and teaches Bob how to “baby step” through life.
Bob takes this philosophy and runs with it, with hilarity ensuing as Bob baby steps his way into Dr. Marvin’s vacation, his family and overtakes the egotistical doctor’s life.
We all got a good laugh (or a dozen).
But the concept of baby-stepping through life is really a very insightful skill.
I’ve discovered that while hustling and hard work is important, it is hustling through a lot of baby steps to get to the big goal.
Sometimes the baby steps cause a lot of frustration (as when I was trying to set up a new email account for a website I’m working on).
Sometimes the baby steps are fun.
But each project is full of baby steps. Accomplishing our goals is just one going through one baby step at a time.
When I considered my latest project I felt overwhelmed. So I wrote out everything I needed to do to get it up and going.
With a list in hand and a determination to take action, I started moving forward.
By the way you can check out my latest site and see how it is progressing. Not everything is up and clicking as it should but I’m hoping to be done by the end of the week.
There’s been a lot to do to get it up, especially since I decided to dramatically cut costs, buy a child theme for wordpress and put the website together myself.
There’s been a lot of stress over the past few days, more caffeine consumed and gray hairs developed.
I managed to uninstall one of the main pages (without being able to reinstall it). I’ve also been able to set up plugins, pictures and all sorts of other techie things I’ve never done before.
Slowly I’m getting through the list. Slowly.
One baby step at a time.
