Fight through Failures

Going through a round (or six) of failures and defeats when trying to launch a new phase in life can be like a punch in the gut.

Fighting through failure is hard.

Somewhere between looking at an increasingly empty bank account, the rejection letters in the inbox, unreturned calls and the lack of anything happening in the direction you want to go can leave the most sanguine person feeling a bit blue.

Some people really can make it happen overnight.

I listened to someone on a podcast recently who, within 6 weeks of losing her job, started her business, made a few thousand dollars and never looked back.

Pretty cool story.

It’s so not my story.

Yours either?

No worries, it’s not a lot of people’s story.  (Most people go through several rounds of failures and defeats as they try to build a business and make money to pay the bills).

The really good news is many of those people who went through significant failures in their effort to create a beautiful business have credited those failures for life lessons that gave them success today.  I’m thinking of folks like Andy Andrews (whose first book was rejected 53 times by publishers.  53. Times.  He self-published and sold thousands of copies).

So what do we do when we keep falling down and feel the sting of defeat a lot more than any joy in progress?

The short answer is, “Keep going.”

Or, as Warren Wiersbe named one of his books, “It’s always too soon to quit.”

The going may look differently.  Moving on may mean

Tweaking something,

Starting

Adding

Subtracting something that is not working

Getting an outside opinions

Taking a day to be quiet and rest

Hiring a coach

Pitching an idea

Calling a potential client or a mentor or a friend

Asking

(When was the last time you asked someone for something?)

I’m writing to you but I’m also writing to myself this week.  It’s been one of those seasons where it feels like four steps forward and three steps back.

But if I’m doing my math right, 4-3 = 1.

So it looks like I’m still ahead.

I bet you are too.

Andy's story is encouraging, motivating and very real.
